The Kinbaku style emphasizes the beauty and emotional connection between the practitioner and the person being tied. It often incorporates complex patterns and techniques to create visually stunning and physically engaging experiences. It’s what draws me to the rope community. I’ve been rock climbing for 20 years so rope and harnesses are very familiar. To that end, a lovely and willing partner along with some extra time during the pandemic inspired me to start learning shibari in 2021. The journey began with a spark of curiosity, and progressed into learning the basics of skill and style, and deepening understanding by developing community connections. Rope is not only about the physical act of tying but also about the psychological and emotional interplay, making it a deeply intimate and expressive practice.
